The MCU Phase 4 has raised some big questions about exactly what happened to old Captain America after Avengers: Endgame, including a rather sad one: is Steve Rogers dead? Captain America's story ended with Endgame, but his legacy lives on. Most pertinently, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier followed on directly from Steve's Endgame ending — more specifically, the climactic moments where an oldCaptain America handed his shield to Sam Wilson. Steve got his happy ending with Peggy Carter — ostensibly in another timeline, though it's a point even Endgame'sdirectors and writers didn't agree on. Ultimately, what happened to Captain America after Endgame remains a mystery.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
While Falcon & Winter Soldier never confirmed anything, Captain America's legacy weighed heavily over the show, especially on Sam Wilson. The show started with Sam giving back the shield and turning away from the mantle, before eventually coming to terms with what it means to be Captain America, including donning a new costume and taking on the persona properly. The MCU has a new Cap, but it's clear the world doesn't knowwhat has happened to the oldSteve Rogers after he returned the MCU Infinity Stones to their respective timelines.

Is Captain America dead, or did he simply continue living a more peaceful existence? Did he go back to the other timeline that he seemingly came from, or might he have... gone to outer space? Falcon & Winter Soldier teased several possibilities about what happened to Captain America after Endgame.
How Old Is Captain America At The End Of Endgame?
When examining what happened to Steve Rogers, it's worth looking at how old Captain America is at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Steve was born, fittingly, on July 4, 1918, while the events of Endgame primarily take place in late 2023 following the five-year time jump. That would make Captain America's age in Avengers: Endgamea whopping 105, even before factoring in him going back in time and then living a new life, without being frozen, alongside Peggy Carter. Add in his second chance with Peggy, which started when he went back to 1948, then Captain America is 180 years old at the very end of the movie. What happened to Captain America afterEndgame? The only thing that's certain is he got very old indeed.
Is Captain America Dead After Avengers: Endgame?
It's clear that the old Captain America is not active in any way, nor are his whereabouts known to anyone besides Sam and Bucky. This allows for the possibility that Steve Rogers really has died, which would fit with the service being held in his honorduring the opening ofa new Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian. Similarly, Hawkeye introduced Rogers: The Musical, while Spider-Man: No Way Home showed off the new Statue of Liberty holding Captain America's shield. While what happened to Captain America after Endgame remains uncertain, what's sure is that the humble and old-fashioned Avengerwould've objected to the musical or any changes to the Statue of Liberty, further supporting the idea that Captain America has died. However, while he is 180 years old, the combination of being frozen for several decades and theSuper Soldier serum both give him the physical age ofa 75-to-80-year-old, and he doesn't appear to be in bad health or frailduringEndgame. This could mean that Captain Americaisquietly living out a few more years in the MCU's background.
Is Old Captain America Back In Hiding After Endgame?
If Cap is still alive, then the simplest answer for what happened to Captain America afterEndgame is that he went into hiding right after giving the shield to Sam.FollowingCaptain America: Civil War, where he opposed the U.S. Government's Sokovia Accords' rules and later broke prisoners out of the Raft, Steve went on the lam with Natasha Romanoff and Sam Wilson, forming the Secret Avengers. While they carried out clandestine missions, they also presumably had to lay low for large periods of time in various corners of the world. It's known that Steve spent at least some time in Wakanda, but not many other details about his time have been revealed, and certainly not on screen. Steve presumably has a lot of contacts, so if he wanted to stay in this timeline, he'd likely have no trouble finding somewhere to seek refuge — perhaps even Wakanda itself —and live out his days peacefully. If this is the case, then Cap could actually make his return alongside the introduction ofnew characters inBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Could Steve Rogers Have Jumped The Timelines Again?
IfSteve's time with Peggy Carter was in another timeline, then, as Joe Russo has confirmed, Capsomehowfound a way to hop back to the main MCU timelinein the final scenes ofAvengers: Endgame–implying that he somehow found the means to keep jumping.Indeed, considering Cap's age and the fact that he made returning all the MCU Infinity Stones look easy, it's possible that Steve Rogers is currently not in the main MCU timeline. Peggy might have survived in the timeline Cap visited, so hecould (and should) have retired there. Another possibility is that after the events ofEndgame, Captain America simply couldn'tbear to retire and is still somehow traveling across space and time. Combined, Cap's infinite resourcefulness and the unpredictable technologies of different timelines/alternate universes could allow him to jumptimelines easily, even withoutaccess to morePym Particles or Iron Man's Endgametime travel tech.
The Captain America Moon Theory
Finally, Falcon & Winter Soldier posited another theory about what happened to Captain America after Avengers: Endgame:he's on the moon. When Sam wastalking with his would-be Falcon replacement Joaquin Torres, the latter mentioned that several conspiracy theories regarding Steve Rogers' whereabouts have sprung up, including the idea that he is on a secret base on the moon. The comment is very obviously ridiculous and meant to be a playful joke, but it could at the very least be a hint at something to come. As shown in past MCU movies, there is life on other celestial bodies, and in the same timeframe that Falcon & Winter Soldier takes place, Nick Fury is up in space running his own operation (which is either the real S.W.O.R.D. or something similar). In Marvel Comics, meanwhile, the Inhumanshad a base on the moon.If thetheory about Captain America changing timelines afterEndgamedoesn't pan out, it's conceivable that he's simply on the moon.
Captain Carter/Hydra Stomper Episode Continues Cap's Legacy In What If?
Although many years have passed since Cap was last in the MCU, his legacy lives on not just through Sam Wilson, but through the new stories inspired by Captain America's legacy. This can be best observed in Marvel'sWhat If...?episode 3, "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger,"a tale set in a universe where Peggy Carter takes the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve. Here, Howard Stark designs a Tesseract-powered Iron Man-like suit of armor for Steve Rogers called the Hydra Stomper, which allows Rogers to fight Hydra alongside Captain Carter. Whenskinny Steve Rogersexpresses his insecurities about being"just a skinny kid from Brooklyn, now just in a big metal suit," Peggy reminds him that the Hydra Stomperis only useful to the war effort because Steve is in it. Curiously, this calls back to when Cap and Tony Stark were arguing in theAvengers, in which Cap snarkily questions Tony's character by telling him,"Big man in a suit of armor. Take that off, what are you?"Even though Cap might actually be dead in the main MCU timeline, his legacy is anything but.
Indeed, there's a real possibility that Capis truly gone and that Chris Evans' return as Captain America won't ever happen. As sad as this seems, this would only open up morefilmmakers to keep taking on the challenge of continuing Cap's legacy. There's a lot of room betweenWhat If...?'s loving tribute to Skinny Steve andSoldier Boy fromThe Boys' fascist subversion of the classic American hero –the curtain won't be closing on Captain America anytime soon.

Sam Wilson's Captain America Appears In Avengers: Quantum Encounter
Avengers: Quantum Encounteris an interactive movie shown on Disney's Wish cruise ship. In it, Sam Wilson gets acknowledged by Captain Marvel, who, after dispatching some baddies, says, "You're welcome, Cap."Notably, this is the first onscreen appearancefor Sam Wilson's Captain America followingFalcon and the Winter Soldier.InAvengers: Quantum Encounter, Sam is acknowledged by both Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel.Although the movie happens in a universe where Thanos' snap never occurred, its cast suggests the events are somehow important to theplot of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,The Marvels,orShang-Chi 2. Indeed, apart from Sam Wilson, Captain Marvel, and Ms. Marvel,Avengers: Quantum Encounteralso features Ant-Man, The Wasp, Shang-Chi, and even Ultron. Thanos' snap may not have happened in this universe, but it can still exist as one of the many timelines/alternate universes within the MCU, any of which could have its own variant of Thanos. Somewhere, in some other corner of the multiverse, Sam Wilson is the one who wields Mjolnir against Thanos and uses the Quantum Realm to steal and then return the Infinity Stones.
Avengers: Endgame's conclusion to Captain America's story, despite its criticisms, has succeeded in keeping audiences tuned in about Marvel's next steps for Captain America.Only the MCU's writers can really answer what happened to Cap afterEndgame, as even they haven't fully fleshed out Steve Rogers' final fate.Nonetheless, Cap's fate could be revealed in thelatter parts of the MCU Phase 4. If not, then it will remain a mystery until the MCU arrives at a point where it actually makes sense forSteve Rogers to make his return.
